HEART

Using the information provided as you scroll overt the heart structures to complete the following table either on paper or on your blog:

Heart Anatomy Structures

STRUCTURE
FUNCTION
DEOXY/OXY BLOOD
LEFT ATRIUM
Chambers that receive blood returning from your body through your veins
OXY
LEFT VENTRICLE
Chambers where blood is pumped to your body through your arteries
OXY
RIGHT ATRIUM
Chambers that receive blood returning from your body through your veins
DEOXY
RIGHT VENTRICLE
Chambers where blood is pumped to your body through your arteries
DEOXY
PULMONARY ARTERY
Carries de-oxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs
DEOXY
AORTA
Carries oxygen-rich blood from your heat to your body
OXY
PULMONARY VEINS
Carries oxygenated blood
OXY
SUPERIOR VENA CAVA
Returns blood to the heart through the veins coming from the head
DEOXY
INFERIOR VENA CAVA
Returns blood to the heart through the veins coming from the lower body
DEOXY
ATRIOVENTRICULAR VALVES (Mitral & Tricuspid)
Controls the flow oxygen-rich blood from your left atrium to you left ventrical; Controls blood flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle.
Mitral - OXY

Tricuspid - DEOXY
CHORDAE TENDINAE
Connects the papillary muscles to the tricuspid valve and the mitral valve in the heart.
DEOXY
SEMI LUNAR VALVES (Pulmonary & Aortic)
Controls blood flow from the right ventricle through the pulmonary artery into your lungs; Controls blood flow from your left ventricle to your aorta.
OXY
SEPTUM
A wall of muscle separating the right and left side of the heart.
N/A

You will have to look up the structure and functions of the Chordae Tendinae elsewhere...

Now find a good heart diagram with all of the above structures labelled and post it to your blog.

Using the following link, describe the structure and function of the CORONARY ARTERIES AND VEINS.  What are they and what do they do?

  • Coronary arteries branch off into smaller arteries, which supply oxygen-rich blood to the entire heart muscle.
