Colon Cancer

What were you surprised by? I was surprised by the look of the cancer. I was expecting worse. What was the most amazing part?  The most amazing part to me was when they extracted the cancer.
Could you relate the parts they are working on (live) to the colouring sheet, diagrams, or notes that we took in class? Kind of but our notes are significantly different.
What was the most interesting part? The interesting part was when he was explaining the procedure step by step.
What did you learn from this that you didn't know before? Colon Cancer in general. I never heard of that type of cancer before.

Interesting Facts

Interesting Facts:

You lose a lot of water by just breathing.
Breathing allows you to take in the oxygen your cells need and expel carbon-dioxide waste. But when you exhale, you also breathe out a lot of water.

Goal\Improvement

I'd like to improve my endurance and my explosiveness.

A test that can help me achieve these goals is the Beep Test.

Explosiveness workout ; http://www.mensfitness.com/training/build-muscle/build-explosive-strength-workout-i

Endurance workout ; Beep Test during fitness or jog with a 40lbs workout vest that I own. ;)

There's a  chart that mixes both goals in the link below ;

I could make improvements in: Studying and assignments

I am really looking forward to: The field trips

The Basics - WORK HABITS:

Attendance (classes missed and why) - I've only missed the woo kim field trip because I wasn't feeling  too well.

Participation in field trips (woo kim, grouse grind, rock climbing) - I attended all field trips except the woo kim one.

Lates (how many & reasons) - A few times because I buy my food when the bell rings.

Preparedness for class (gym strip &/or supplies) - Always have my gym strip and supplies

Class time management (are you using your class time to complete your work?  engaged in class discussion? participating? following along? doing your best? or talking too much? ) - I finish most of my assignments. I get distracted every once and a while but I'm usually trying to stay focused.

Blog assignment completion - (out of 8 assignments) Comments? I believe that im missing a few but im planning on completing them soon

Chambers that receive blood returning from your body through your veins
OXY
LEFT VENTRICLE
Chambers where blood is pumped to your body through your arteries
OXY
RIGHT ATRIUM
Chambers that receive blood returning from your body through your veins
DEOXY
RIGHT VENTRICLE
Chambers where blood is pumped to your body through your arteries
DEOXY

Carries oxygen-rich blood from your heat to your body
OXY
PULMONARY VEINS
Carries oxygenated blood
OXY
SUPERIOR VENA CAVA
Returns blood to the heart through the veins coming from the head
DEOXY
INFERIOR VENA CAVA
Returns blood to the heart through the veins coming from the lower body
DEOXY
ATRIOVENTRICULAR VALVES (Mitral & Tricuspid)
Controls the flow oxygen-rich blood from your left atrium to you left ventrical; Controls blood flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle.

Final Assessment Blog Post

Final Portfolio Assessment "Report Card" Post

There are Four pillars to provide evidence (screen shots + links) for, each worth 25%.

For report card posts in grades 8/9 we are legally required to provide a letter grade, and in 10-12 we need an actual percentage to go along with the more meaningful formative writing, so after discussing your semester you will need to put a summative evaluation on it.

As a way to help you organize your thoughts, the following breakdown for the "four pillars" and thematic questions can be used, but you may move beyond these in your explanation.

1) Participation- this category includes all of the factors around your ability to participate and the quality of your participation of in-class activities. Some things to consider would include: attendance and punctuality, wearing gym strip (actual change of clothing from what you wear the rest of the day),  physical presence/activity level during games, intensity of participation, skill level in various games, and the motivation behind your selection of activities on choice days. Missing “sometimes” or having “no strip” more than once or twice should result in a failing mark here.

My attendance this year has been pretty good, although I have missed several classes I have made up that missed time by giving a great performance in class. From what I can remember, I have brought my gym strip for every single class this semester so I'm pretty proud of that. My physical attendance wasn't that great because sometimes I didn't do the activities due to my comfort zone. However, when we played games that I was comfortable with I really tried and made sure that my presence was felt. My skill in various games was very good. On choice days, if basketball was an option, i'd choose basketball because ball is life.

2) Social Responsibility and Contribution to the Class- this category includes all of the factors that led to your improving skills around working with peers to make everyone's experience more successful. Some things to consider would include: examples of leadership (organizing others, encouraging peers), examples of initiative (helping with equipment, helping with other classes WITHOUT being asked to), positive energy and social dynamic during activities, honesty during competition and on fitness scores, and connections with the community/volunteering. Needing reminders from a teacher to do the above items negates their impact… thus resulting in a failing grade here. If you need to be talked to, you didn’t do well.

I try to get my peers to follow my footsteps on fitness days by giving them an example to follow. Which is by doing really good and being a leader. I'm not going to say that I was perfect all semester but I can say that %95 of the time on fitness I was trying to be a good example. I also put away equipment , not by volunteer but if it was needed I gave it.

3) Healthy Living - this category includes all aspects of your past, current, and future data and goals on your health and fitness. Some of the things to consider would include: your actual fitness scores and what they teach you, noteworthy changes in your fitness, some of the barriers/limitations you face in participating, dietary choices and extra curricular activity choices and their impact on overall health, injury prevention, management, and rehabilitation, and future plans/goals for overall health choices. This is the connecting piece between class and life… if you have no evidence of choices/activities outside of class you should be failing this section.

My average result on the beep test this year was a 12. My maximum was would be 12.4 so I'm pretty proud of that because that shows that I pushed my hardest every time we did the beep test. I achieved my goals this semester because I feel like my cardio improved a lot and that was one of the goals that I said I'd wish to accomplish by the end of this semester. A barrier for me was my knee, I have a weak knee and that kind of bothered me throughout the semester but I managed to fight through it. I'll admit that I didn't eat healthy because I love junk food too much but I'm planning on eating healthier in the next few years. For extra curricular activities I joined the seniors basketball spring league and that kept my fitness on point.

4) Digital Portfolio and Reflective skills: this category includes all aspects of your blog posts. Some of the things to consider would include: the total collection of digital evidence and number of posts, the quality of the selection of evidence as a demonstration of learning, the quality of the summaries/explanation of the evidence (with reflection of effort, new learning cited, research included, and future goals/plans set), the usefulness of comments on peers blog entries as a part of socially constructed learning and assessment, and your ability to synthesize your entries into a summative final post which provides evidence for your learning. Neufeld’s classes should have: videos of weight room workouts, videos of themselves in the weightroom, images and video of fitness and games, reflections about diet with evidence of meals, evidence of exercise outside of school, a reflective post about the quality of your blog as compared to others, multiple posts about your fitness scores on testing days (beep, vertical), a mid term post, a final post, at least one post with evidence of social responsibility choices you make in class, plus others.

We have worked very hard to create opportunities for you to learn about being intrinsically motivated, to learn about and find value in personalizing your experience to best suite your own physical needs, and we have devalued the external motivators like grades as a reason for being your best. However, along with our legal obligations, we would like to have you understand the spirit of what grades are supposed to reflect, and rather than having your "stories" be excuses for unfair teacher assessed grades, have them be your evidence for co-constructed grading. To do this you need to be honest about the four pillars of learning and how well you approached each of them.

While they are not set at 25% each, if you have minimal evidence for one or more of the pillars this should signal to you that you were NOT successful in that area, which would then be reflected in you self assessed final grade. Your final post should have evidence The goal here is for you to be able to critically and honestly see yourself within the context of the pillars and the class. Nobody is perfect and nobody is without hope... finding yourself in the middle will be more rewarding than anything I as a teacher can ever say about you. Good luck!!

Overall I really liked the class, one of the reasons why I lke it so much is because I had Ms.Phillips for the first time and I think that she ran the class well and balanced the activities that we did properly. I think that I should be getting a 87% because of fitness days. The only reason I think that I shouldn't be getting a 100% is because I wasn't participation much on choice days. Other than that I think an 87% would be satisfying.

There are 3 important pillars of PE that you must consider in order to self assess your progress.
Please consider, reflect on and write about each of the following categories of when determining your mark.

1.  Action: Attendance & Participation (60%)
Attendance, gym strip, willingness to participate in a variety of activities.  Field trip attendance if applicable.  Effort in different activities & block wide fitness days.

Attendance wise, I'm always there if i'm not, I usually get my parents to call in.
I always have my gym strip with me but it depends if I'm motivated enough to get changed and participate with maximum effort.
My willingness to participate is questionable at times because to be honest, I'm not really the type to try new things but most of the time I end up giving in and doing whatever we'd be doing.
My effort on fitness days is tremendous! ( except for when we do fitness )

2.  Contribution: to the class as a community - leadership, responsible decision making, empathy towards others, inclusion. How do you make our class better? (25%)

I'm see myself as someone who motivates the group of people I  surround myself with during this PE class. Although, it may not look like I do, I try my hardest to keep my friends involved by showing them how it's done. I'm nice and i'm pretty sure nobody's scared of me.

3.  Reflection: thoughtful completion of blog posts, self assessment, knowledge of strengths & weaknesses, preparation for interview.(15%)

I don't usually use my blog that often but when I do I try to make it as accurate as possible. Eventhough I don't blog much, the few times that I blogged I learnt many things such as my weaknesses and what my goals are.

In my opinion I think I deserve 86% in this class.

Participation review

a)  your attendance & daily effort (being prepared, willing to participate)
b)  the energy that you bring to class
c)  how you deal with participation in activities that you are not very skilled at (being outside of your comfort zone)
d)  what can YOU do to make our class better from now on?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a) My attendance is pretty good. My daily effort is satisfactory, sometimes I'm just not in the mood to do some things so that causes my effort to go down.

b) I think I bring good energy to the class most of the time by participating and what not..

c) I usually don't do it or give minimal effort in whatever were doing.

d) Participate more and bring more positive energy to the class.

Dance Week

Please write about Dance Week - What was your attendance during this week?  Why?  Describe your participation throughout the week.  What was your favourite part?

My attendance for dance week was pretty good, I don't think I missed out on any of the dancing. Because I'm a good student and I don't skip class. My participation during that week was alright, I wasn't really feeling the whole dance week so I didn't really want to do it.

THE BASICS:

Attendance - How many classes have you missed?   Why?

I have missed 2 classes because I was sick.

Did Not Participate (DNP) - How many classes have you not participated in?  Why?

I did not participate 3 times because i wasn't interested in the activity that we were doing.

No Strip (NS) - How many times have you forgotten / not changed into gym strip?

I always have my strip.

How have the above most basic parts of coming to PE affected your ability to participate in PE so far this semester? It does not affect my ability to participate in PE.

PARTICIPATION:

How would you rate the intensity of your participation on fitness day?   On regular classes?
Provide a specific example of a class (or two) that you are proud of your participation.  Why? In what ways could you improve?

9/10, 8/10. When we did the normal beep test, I ran a 12 and then the second time we did it in the small gym, I ran a 13. I can improve by staying fit outside of school.

OTHER CONTRIBUTIONS:

What are your best attributes in PE?

Sometimes I encourage Raffy or Shabeg. Sometimes I help clean up equipment.

What type of energy do you bring to class?

I bring amazing energy.

What can you do to make the class better for you and others?

Participate in everything.

Vertical Workouts

Today, I worked on my vertical so I can be able to jump higher in basketball. In my previous post, Goals for my Body, I didn't feel the intensity of the workout video I found the day of that post. So I found the 2 following videos on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IU01Gk6nxrU  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KpjEi6S7H4

I liked the 2 videos I found today more than the other one because I personally feel like it's more intense.

Arthropods

        3 characteristics of an arthropod:

         - Exoskeleton
         - Compound Eyes
         - Segmented Bodies

        Video:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-fK4ESb-vo

I find this video interesting because it shows you how artropods live in different environments and how they adapt to their surroundings. It aso shows you the different classes of Arthropoda ( Trilobitomorpha, Merostomata, Arachnida, Malacostraca, Insecta, Chilopoda, Diplopoda) There's alot of stuff I can say about the video because it's almost 30 minutes long but i'm just going to keep it short and simple.
